Second-seeded Burnt Hills rallied for four runs in the 5th inning to grab a 4-4 deadlock and go on to an 8-4 win over seventh-seeded Catholic Central in a Class A baseball quarterfinal Friday at Burnt Hills.
Jeff Heck's RBI double broke the tie and Mike Brienza slammed a three-run home run only a few batters later to give the back open for the Spartans, who affected to 11-10 overall after the win.
Burnt Hills will bring on No. 3 Averill Park at 6 p.m. Saturday in the semifinal round at Saint Rose's Pulmeri Complex.
SOFTBALL
Mary Beth Dombrowski hit a solo home run to take off the back and Morgan Mazone added another solo blast in the 5th inning as Bethlehem trimmed Ballston Spa 2-1 in a Class AA quarterfinal-round game.
The Eagles (16-5) also got a duplicate and one from Meghan Burns. Katy Rami hit a couple of singles and drove in the only run for the Scotties.
Bethlehem will face Colonie in Wednesday at Veeder Park.
In another AA quarterfinal, Caitlin Lawson had a dual and two singles to roast in two runs and Shenendehowa beat Guilderland 5-1.
Courtney Dayter struck out 14 to serve No. 2 Cohoes top No. 7 Greenville, 2-1, in a Class B quarterfinal.
Dayter allowed three hits in seven innings for the Tigers (15-5).
The Tigers will play Hoosick Falls, which beat Taconic Hills 1-0, at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Clifton Common.
Rachel Quackenbush pitched a two-hitter and struck out nine for the Panthers (19-1). Hoosick Falls' run came in the sixth when Carson Williams singled and came round on a couple of sacrifice bunts and a wild pitch.
Duanesburg's Dani Hennel fanned 15 and hit a two-run one to track the top-seeded Eagles past No. 9 Waterford, 4-0, in a Class C quarterfinal.
Hennel gave up one hit while Olivia Matz contributed a solo home run and an RBI double for Duanesburg (20-2).
No. 7 Schalmont upset No. 2 Hudson Falls 4-2 in a Form A quarterfinal. Liz Kuhlkin hit a two-run double in the 5th inning for the Sabres (10-9) to click a 2-2 tie. Schalmont will hold on No. 6 Averill Park, which downed No. 3 Ichabod Crane 4-3 in 10 innings, in the semifinals. Meaghan Haggerty's two-out, two-run single in the 7th inning tied the back at 3. Cara Danish scored the winning run in the tenth on an error.
