New Zealand superstars Dan Carter and Sonny Bill Williams were too hot to hold as the Crusaders singed the Sharks with a blistering display of attacking rugby at Twickenham.
The Crusaders had wrapped up a bonus point inside 33 minutes with tries from Carter, who finished with a personal haul of 22 points, wings Sean Maitland and Zac Guildford and fullback Israel Dagg.
Williams, who made his All Blacks debut at Twickenham in November, was the destroyer-in-chief with a strong mix of force and style that cut the Sharks midfield to shreds. Some of his offloads were outrageous.
The Crusaders surged into a 34-18 lead at the separation but the Sharks refused to confess defeat and hit back to fix a bonus point of their own.
Alistair Hargreaves and Odwa Ndungane added to first-half tries from Willem Alberts and Jacques-Louis Potgieter to get the Sharks back within nine points.
Maitland's second try sealed the victory after another electric build-up as the Crusaders lived up to their hope of giving their earthquake-hit city of Christchurch the chance to smile.
This was the first Super Rugby match ever to be arranged outside of the Sanzar nations. It was touched to Twickenham because of harm to the Crusaders' home AMI Stadium.
Christchurch, a city steeped in rugby history, was hit by an earthquake on February 22 which measured 6.3 on the Richter Scale and claimed at least 166 lives.
This match, which featured 25 internationals in the two starting line-ups, was the centerpiece to a week of fundraising for the Red Cross earthquake appeal. Donations from the 35,094 ticket sales alone will total 175,470 pound.
Once the RFU have finalised their accounts from hosting the match, they will likewise be devising a donation to the appeal fund.
For all the Crusaders' magical back play, the observance All Blacks coach Graham Henry will have been but as impressed by the scrummaging work of Wyatt Crockett, Corey Flynn and Owen Franks. They did not have Richie McCaw on the openside but Matt Todd proved to be the latest top-class openside off the New Zealand conveyor belt.
That first-half scrum platform allowed the Crusaders' back division to cut open and they did so to great force with the Sharks dazzled by Williams' quick hands and Carter's vision.
It was really the Sharks who made the first breakthrough with their powerful openside flanker Alberts crashing over the gainline and so stretching for the line.
But Williams had already set the shade by smashing through Potgieter and so sending Robbie Fruean away with an incredible offload.
The Sharks were penalised on their own business and Carter slotted the beginning of his three penalties before he and Williams combined to produce the opening Crusaders try.
Williams set the movement in motion, Carter released Guildford with a deft inside ball and Brad Thorn supplied the scoring pass for Maitland.
A strong Crusaders shove then caused mayhem in the Sharks ranks and Williams stepped inside Meyer Bosman before slipping the hand for Carter to make his 27th Super Rugby try under the posts.
Potgieter briefly stemmed the course with a punishment but the Crusaders were in ruthless mood.
Halfback Andy Ellis collected the egg on the coil and combined with Fruean to send Dagg over for their third try as the Crusaders opened a 27-10 lead in 26 minutes.
The Kiwis continued their point-a-minute fest as Williams, Carter and Fruean left the Sharks defenders clutching at thin air to send Guildford over.
A lax moment from kick-off allowed Potgieter to hit the Sharks' second and the South Africans mounted a return after the separation as Hargreaves stretched for the line.
Ndungane profited from Dagg's careless decision to get a quick lineout as the Sharks sealed their try bonus point but the Crusaders, despite losing Kieran Read and Carter, saw out the victory.
Ospreys-bound halfback Kahn Fotuali'i opened the gap for Guildford and he drew the lowest man before sending Maitland away for the clinching try.
Carter said in the build-up to the game week that, with the initial clean-up work now done, his persona is to keep spirits up in the Christchurch community by playing winning rugby.
In every sense it was mission established for the Crusaders at Twickenham.
